Our adventure to Sonop was as thrilling as the destination itself. After days of exploring Namibia's wild landscapes without cell phones, driving on dusty roads, and camping under the stars, arriving at Sonop felt like stepping into a different era. The approach to the property was dramatic – a young boy opened a gate for us, and we drove past a small airstrip, hinting at the opulence that awaited us. While some guests might arrive in style via private jet, our journey in rugged 4x4s and the contrast of sleeping in tents the night before only heightened the sense of luxury that enveloped us upon arrival.
The hotel itself is a marvel, blending seamlessly into the breathtaking landscape. The design, inspired by the British colonial era of the 1920s, is evident in every detail. Our 'tent' was a lavish 5-star suite, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and fields. The authentic colonial furnishings transported us back in time, providing a sense of nostalgia and luxury.
The communal areas of the hotel were equally impressive. The cigar lounge and billiard room exuded a unique charm, offering cozy corners for relaxation and socializing. Dining at Sonop was an experience in itself. We savored local dishes in an elaborately set tent, complete with a long table, silverware, and 1920s music playing in the background – a true journey through time.
The hotel's pool, set on enormous rock boulders, featured a poolside bar – the perfect spot for sipping cocktails and soaking in the panoramic desert views. The wooden walkways connecting the hotel's various sections gave a sense of floating between luxurious spaces.
One of the most magical experiences was the poolside cinema set up at sunset. Watching a movie under the stars, with the distant sounds of lions and other wild animals, was surreal and unforgettable.
